Code Camp 2024
We are excited to bring Code Camp 2024 to
Columbia County March 16th through the 23rd.
The Columbia County Makerspace Code Camp 2024 theme includes using a companion computer, machine learning, and using AI tools, as well as basic programming. Our schedule and resources are listed below and will be posted to our calendar, on the right side of our webpage. Be sure to join our mailing list, to receive important notices, if you have not already done so. We look forward to seeing you in March!
Registration for the Code Camp is required. Registration is free in advance, or $5 at the door. You must be 18 years of age, or be accompanied by a responsible adult.

March 16, Saturday
Location: First Baptist Church of Lake City, 182 NE Justice Street, Lake City, Florida 32055
“Learning to Use a Companion Computer” From 9:00 a.m to 10:00 a.m.
Instructor: Shawn Holmgren
This will be a class focused on the use of an Arduino board, or a Raspberry Pi computer, and the opportunities to learn programming by using them.
Recommended to bring: Laptop, notepad and you may optionally purchase and bring a Sunfounder Arduino Beginner Kit as this will be the model of training tools explored.

“Intro to Scratch Programming” From 10:30 a.m to 11:30 a.m.
Instructor: Shawn Holmgren
This class will focus on using the programming language Scratch to create a simple program that will run on an Arduino Board.
Recommended to bring: Laptop, notepad and you may wish to register an account with scratch.mit.edu for use during this exercise.
March 18, Monday
“Machine Learning for Kids” (and Adults) from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Description: This will be a class focused on using machine learning tools from https://machinelearningforkids.co.uk which is similar to playing a Game. Don’t let the name fool you, It’s really fun whether you are a kid or just a kid at heart!
The class will encourage the use of computer machine learning tools for problem solving, image detection, language translation, etc.
March 20, Wednesday

“Using AI in the Workplace” from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m
Instructor: Noah Walker
Decription: This class will focus on how to harness the AI tools, like Bing Co-Pilot and Chat GPT, that are evolving online, to increase productivity in the workplace.
March 22, Friday

” Hour of Code” from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m

A fun class, intended for all ages, that opens the door to anyone interested in learning to code. You can learn to program games and apps in Python, Scratch and many more programming languages. All it takes is one hour to get hooked on this rewarding program.

Learn how to build a website, using WordPress, an easy to learn intuitive platform for web developers.
March 23, Saturday (Conclusion)

“AI Prompt Engineering” from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

This class will focus on writing prompts, (Queries), for use with large language models (LLMs), or in layman’s terms “asking an AI engine to deliver the right information”.

“Using AI to Write Code” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m
Instructor: Ken Adelglass
This class teaches you how to create an entire program or project using only AI tools, with a final demonstration of a completed AI coded project. While everyone is encouraged to attend, this class is probably geared more towards the intermediate and skilled programmer, since a basic knowledge of coding is expected.
